The 10 day challenge – to take your mental wellbeing to the next level

We all have mental health.

Mental health influences how we think and feel about ourselves and others, and how we interpret events.

Having good mental health can help us to be more resilient, feel good and function well, have more positive relationships with those around us and deal with difficult times now and in the future.

Is having a bad day or bad week normal?

We all have positive and negative emotions that come and go based upon what is happening around us – these are everyday feelings. For example, feeling down, angry and stressed is a normal part of life……. just like it is normal to feel happy, confident and carefree sometimes. It is when these negative feelings that go on for a very long time and stop us doing what we want in life - this is what can affect our mental health.

SO what do we need to do to improve our mental wellbeing???

There are things we can do every day to improve our mental health and wellbeing. Research shows that these things can help us to manage the symptoms of many mental health problems. They may also help prevent some problems from developing or getting worse.

The 10-day 5 ways to wellbeing challenge involves completing each of these 5 actions daily (the results on day 10 will speak for themselves – try for yourself!!)

1. Connect – connecting is about building and strengthening relationships with the people around you, we can do this by spending meaningful time with people each day – evidence shows by giving time to these relationships, we feel happier and more secure. Giving us a better sense of purpose.

2. Be active – look for ways to be active every day, find something you enjoy. It does not have to be a marathon. Something that suits your fitness and mobility. Cycling, gardening, walking and dancing. Being active everyday causes changes in our brain (release of endorphins – the feel good hormone) which can positive effect our mood.

3. Take notice – this is to be present in the here and now. Pay attention to the world around you – nature, people, your thoughts, and feelings. Becoming more aware of the present moment can help us enjoy the world around us and help us understand ourselves better.

4. Keep learning- is about learning new skills and information about topics that interest us - we can keep learning by trying a new recipe, signing up for a course, learning a language, an instrument. Learning can boost our confidence and self-esteem; help build a sense of purpose and help us to connect with others.

5. Give – is about small acts of kindness to other people – this could be making a cuppa for someone you live with, signing up for volunteering, helping someone with a project/task, even asking a friend or a colleague how they are and giving the time to listen. We can’t tell how someone feels just by looking at them or what they share online – to the outside world things may appear positive but in reality, maybe it isn’t. Giving time to listen is so important. And giving back to others can create positive feelings and help us feel more satisfied with life.

Each of the 5 ways to wellbeing have been shown to make a positive difference in how we feel and live our life.

By including these actions every day we can improve our mental health and wellbeing – what are you waiting for😊
